Running a marathon can be a challenging and rewarding experience. And when the weather forecast for race day is rain, it’s important to be prepared.

Here are some tips to help you get ready for a rainy marathon:

Dress Appropriately

When it comes to running in the rain, your clothing can make or break your race experience. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing that wicks moisture away from your skin. Avoid cotton, as it can become heavy and uncomfortable when wet. Also consider wearing a plastic poncho and a brimmed hat to keep the rain off of you as much as possible.

Pro tip: Bring a Mylar blanket to the starting line to stay warm.

Protect Your Feet

Wear a pair of running shoes with plenty of tread on the soles to prevent you from slipping on wet surfaces. You should also wear a pair of socks that are made from moisture-wicking material to help your feet dry quicker.

Apply Body Glide or Vaseline

When running in the rain, chafing can become a real problem. Don’t let it happen.

To prevent chafing, apply Body Glide or Vaseline to areas that are prone to chafing, like your inner thighs, underarms, nipples and feet.

Pro tip: Both Body Glide and Vaseline are absolute life savers; but I prefer to use Body Glide because it doesn’t stain your clothes.

Stay Hydrated

Even though it’s raining, you still need to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after the race to keep help avoid muscle cramps and dehydration.

Adjust Your Pace

Running in the rain can be more challenging than running in dry conditions. Adjust your pace accordingly and be prepared to slow dow if necessary. It’s better to finish the race at a slower pace than to run too fast and risk an injury.

Pro tip: Take smaller steps to increase your balance and reduce your slip risk.

Believe in Your Training

You’ve trained hard and deserve to stand at the start line with your head held high. No amount of rain will take away what you’ve already accomplished. The rainfall is just one more test of your strength and your will. You can do this!

By following these tips, you can be well-prepared for a rainy marathon and give yourself the best chance of a successful race. Remember to dress appropriately, protect your feet, apply anti-chafe, stay hydrated, adjust your pace, and believe in your training.
