Every week, I coach powerful, ambitious women who want to run faster, feel stronger, and push their limits—and too many of them are doing it in the wrong bra.
Not because they don’t care about gear.
Because they never realized how much it mattered.
But here’s the thing: the type of sports bra you wear matters.
No matter what size you are, you still need real support, because your comfort and performance matter.
The Invisible Pain Problem
You might not have bounce pain, but you’ve may have felt this:
- A dull ache in your chest after a run.
- Red marks or rubbing near your shoulders.
- A constant need to adjust mid-run.
That’s not “just how it is.” That’s a gear problem—and it’s slowing you down.
Medium-Impact Minimum. High-Impact Preferred.
Here’s the truth:
Research from the University of Portsmouth’s Breast Health Research Group shows that breasts move in three dimensions when you run: up/down, side-to-side, and forward/back—and that movement can reach up to 10–15 cm (about 4–6 inches) in unsupported conditions (Scurr et al., 2010).
A “light support” bra isn’t built to control that motion. You’re literally fighting physics with fabric that wasn’t designed for the job.
If you’re running, sprinting, or doing HIIT, you need at least a medium-impact sports bra, and ideally a high-impact one.
Because support isn’t just about comfort—it’s about performance.
Biomechanics studies have found that better breast support improves running efficiency and upper-body motion, while inadequate support alters natural stride patterns (Milligan et al., 2015).
When your chest is secure, your stride becomes smoother, your breathing easier, and your focus sharper, because your body’s not wasting energy managing discomfort or distraction.
Science Behind the Bounce
Here’s what the research actually shows:
- Significant movement: Breast displacement can reach 10–15 cm in unsupported conditions during running. (Scurr, White & Hedger, 2009; Scurr et al., 2010).
- Improved biomechanics: Higher support reduces torso rotation and arm movement, helping maintain more efficient running form. (Milligan et al., 2015).
- Common discomfort: In a survey of female marathon runners, over half reported breast pain during exercise and many said it affected how they ran. (Brown, White, Brasher & Scurr, 2014).
- Support reduces pain: Recent studies confirm that greater breast support is linked to less breast-related discomfort during running. (Haake et al., 2022).
Translation: The right sports bra doesn’t just feel better, it reduces motion, discomfort, and wasted energy.
The Brazen Fit Test
Before you hit the pavement again, try this:
- Jump Test:
Put on your sports bra and jump in front of a mirror. If anything moves independently from your body—that’s a no. - Strap Check:
The straps should sit firmly but comfortably. If they slide, you’ll end up hunching subconsciously. - Band Fit:
The band should stay level all the way around your ribcage. It’s the anchor of your support. - Breath Test:
Take a deep breath. You should feel secure, not strangled.
Runner-Approved Bras for Smaller Chests (A–D)
These are the real MVPs for smaller-breasted runners:
- Brooks Dare Crossback or Drive Convertible:* Designed for runners by runners.
- Nike Altate: Light, sleek, and surprisingly supportive — engineered for comfort that moves with you.
- Under Armour Infinity High:* Sculpted for compression and shape.
- Lululemon Energy Bra High Support: Sleek, soft, and runner-tested.
These aren’t “nice-to-haves.” They’re performance gear.
Comfort Is Power
We’ve been conditioned to tolerate discomfort—to think a little chafing or a sore chest is just part of being an athlete.
But being Brazen means we don’t adapt to pain.
We eliminate it.
Your sports bra isn’t a luxury. It’s part of your equipment. And the right one can literally change the way you run, train, and feel in your body.
So if you’re looking for a way to enhance your running performance…
Upgrade your bra.
Because being Brazen isn’t about ignoring discomfort…
It’s about demanding better from your gear, your training, and yourself.
Stay brazen,
